Happy Birthday Stuart Scott
The great Stuart Scott would have been 54 years old today. I say would have because we lost this legend way too young on January 4th, 2015, following a long battle with cancer. The GOAT was famous for bringing swagger to ESPN, captivating audiences with wordplay influenced by hip hop, pop-culture references, and a style that was as cool as the other side of the pillow. The GOAT is the reason why I wanted to become a journalist. I watched in awe as a man that looked and sounded like me lit up my television talking sports (and making pretty decent money doing so). I knew then that that was the life for me. Even in his final days, the GOAT did what GOATs do: went out like a boss! The last we heard from the GOAT, he was receiving the Jimmy V award at the ESPYs for his battle with cancer. And like he always does, swept us away with his words as he undoubtedly had one of the greatest acceptance speeches of all time, for an award that’s literally famous for the great acceptance speeches in the past. He leaves behind two beautiful daughters who still fight their dad’s fight for cancer. I still have the GOAT as my Instagram Avi, as continuous inspiration to get me to where I need to be in my career. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the GOAT, Stuart Scott and continue to Rest in Paradise! Your words, message, swagger, and inspiration live in every black journalist. We will continue to make the Big Boo-Yah! Proud.
